Recording Day at Farmstead & Wild with the Biodiversity Information Service (BIS)

Recording days provide an opportunity to record all the wildlife seen on the day to understand what species are present in the area. On the day, you will practise biological recording, meet like-minded people and learn from our knowledgeable vice county recorders.

Come along to record the wildlife in your local area, meet like-minded people and connect with the natural world.

This site is a 17th‑century smallholding of approximately 30 acres, occupying a ridge with steep valley sides and woodland edges on either side. The site supports a mosaic of habitats, including unimproved meadow grassland historically managed as hay meadows and now under low‑intensity grazing, wetland areas, streams that support white‑clawed crayfish and a wildlife pond. Woodland and wooded margins occur mainly along field boundaries and watercourses and include dense hedgerows, some veteran trees with associated dead wood, a recently established native woodland plantation (2022) and an orchard.

The terrain is varied and uneven, with a combination of open, relatively flat fields and steeper sloping ground along the ridge. Some areas, particularly near watercourses and in lower‑lying ground can be wet or boggy underfoot.

All welcome although you should be confident in identifying wildlife without support and be willing to record the wildlife you can identify on the day. No dogs allowed at the event due to presence of livestock.
